Hi, it’s Patrik Hutzel from intensivecarehotline.com with another quick tip for families in intensive care.

So today’s tip is about silent DNR’s or silent NFR’s. So for those of you that don’t know what the DNR or NFR stands for, DNR stands for “Do Not Resuscitate” and NFR stands “Not For Resuscitation”, which in essence is the same.

So basically what that means, the ICU may have already asked you or other family members, whether you want your loved one being DNR or NFR, which in essence means that your loved one would not be resuscitated in case of their heart stopping, or in case of any deterioration, or at least there would be limits around treatment.

So, if you followed my blog for any length of time, you would know that I strongly oppose to consent to DNR. But even if you have opposed to a DNR or an NFR, that doesn’t mean the ICU is going to stop. So that’s when I want to talk about the quote unquote silent DNR, basically what that means is if the ICU thinks there should be a DNR or an NFR for your loved one, it means they are probably slowly withholding treatment or they’re not giving the best treatment options.
