Joann and her mother did their utmost to care for the children, but they were joined at different times by other women who lived in the same house or nearby. Kelly recalls in his 2012 autobiography, "Soulacoaster: The Diary of Me," that these additional figures included "cousins, aunties, friends of my aunties, all older women." He wrote: “When my mother wasn’t around, the women ran a little freer. … As I crept up in age… I found myself more curious and sometimes aroused, and I was ashamed of being aroused.”
