We Nealry Tripled Our Investment On A Game Boy Games Lot!

What if you could take, say, a $70 investment and various handheld video games and turn that into a $250 lot? Would you do it? That is the question we had in front of us recently as Video Games Monthly presented that opportunity to the world. They posted to X that you could buy what they were calling a "Box of S***" handheld games. They were very transparent that these were generally not games they would typically sell, either with shell damage, label damage, or just not very good games. I've taken advantage of these offers a few times in the past, so I thought what the heck, let's spin the wheel and make a deal and see what kind of games we could get.

I was impressed with the number of systems that were represented by this lot. You had original Game Boy games, Super Game Boy enhanced games for the Super NES, Game Boy Color, Gameboy Advance, Nintendo DS, and even a couple 3DS and Game Gear games. From an assortment level, there's quite a bit here.

Having bought one of their Xbox lots in the past, I knew that there would be some good, some bad, and some downright ugly. Let's talk about the good.

The Good:
Sonic the Hedgehog 2
Double Dribble 5 on 5
Double Dragon
Croc
Madden 06
Tiger woods golf
Brain Age
Hasbro Board Games Collection
Scribblenauts
Deal or No Deal

All of these games are games that either I would play, have played, or I'm glad that I now own. I may flip a couple of these down the road, specifically Sonic 2 as I already have a copy for the Game Gear. But I've never had a chance to play Scribblenauts, so I'm looking forward to that. I always enjoyed watching Deal or No Deal so I'm interested to see how the game plays. And can you really go wrong with Double Dribble or Double Dragon? Double Dragon does have some cartridge damage, which they were completely transparent about, but as it is this will play just fine.

The bad:
Double Dora the explorer
A few RPGs
Nothing import-wise I really want to play

When you buy lots like this it's going to be a crap shoot. Out of the games listed above, those are all things that I want to play at some point in time. There was a ton of stuff here, however, I have no interest in and will simply be put in a $5 box at a future convention. It's a good assortment to add, but there's nothing really compelling here. And for me, the difference between the good quality and the bad quality fell off extremely quickly.

The ugly:
N'Sync

Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen's games
Petz, Dogz, & Cats

I knew I was going to see these types of games in this box, I just knew it. I will say I was a bit shocked to see a complete in-box copy of NSYNC get to the show, but the completion level does not dismiss the craptastic quality of that game or lack thereof. Towards the end of the Game Boy Color and beginning of the Game Boy Advance the Lizzie McGuire and Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen games were everywhere. I'm actually a bit shocked there weren't any Hannah Montana games, to be honest. I am not complaining by the way.

How did we do?
In the end, for roughly $70 investment we received $250 in value for the games. I know are good friends John Riggs (@JohnRiggs) and Kris at @GameDadShow have both also ordered these boxes and I believe this box is worth even more than theirs. Take that suckers! But honestly, there's about a third of this box that either I will play or someone in my family will play. Regarding what I will play, that alone covers the cost of this box. The other stuff I knew before I even committed to buying this was going to be trade bait or sale bait that I would use toward other purchases down the road. I will always look to the video games monthly liquidation boxes with a keen eye to decide whether or not I would like to invest in one, but the few that I've gotten so far have pretty much paid off. In the end, we nearly Tripled Our Investment On A Game Boy Games Lot, and that's a good thing!
