As Abraham escorted his divine guests towards Sodom, God pondered whether to reveal His intentions to Abraham. Ultimately, God decided that Abraham should know, citing Abraham's role as the future leader of a great nation that would embody righteousness. God told Abraham that the sins of Sodom and Gomorrah had reached a critical level, warranting an investigation that might lead to their destruction.

Abraham, concerned for the innocent residents of Sodom, boldly approached God. "Would you destroy the righteous along with the wicked?" he asked. "What if there are 50 good people there?"

God replied, "For 50 righteous people, I will spare the city."

Not stopping there, Abraham continued to negotiate, lowering the number each time—from 45, 40, 30, to 20, and finally to 10. Each time God agreed, displaying His mercy and willingness to spare the city for even a small number of righteous individuals. Content, God left to continue His divine work, and Abraham returned home, his intercession complete but the fate of Sodom still hanging in the balance.
