"Men live in the thrall of superstition & fear. We fear the gods, we fear the judgment of the gods, we fear death, we fear the judgment of our fellow human beings. We fear the unknown essentially. & he said the goal of philosophy is to liberate men from fear & to do that you have to liberate them from superstition. This is the key to understanding just about everything that Epicurus does. He wants us to have no superstition at all."- Wesley Cecil on the motives of Epicurus

"Notice self-sacrifice. Epicurus thinks that's stupid. Why would you sacrifice yourself? people go 'oh you know I'm going to sacrifice myself to help somebody' Epicurus would say why? That's probably dumb. You probably ought not do it. What are you going to get out of it would be his question. Because if you're not going to get an increase in tranquility then don't help them. He was very suspicious of these notions. Because if you are not living pleasantly then you're not living wisely, and you're living unjustly. Notice he balls those all up. And we (modern people) always want to separate them out. 'Oh I have to do the right thing' and people always give all these examples 'oh I did the right thing and suffered for it, that makes me noble!'
Epicurus says 'no that means you did the wrong thing. And you're suffering. Because you're dumb.' "
