The 172 passengers represented a relatively high load factor for the 186-seat Ilyushin IL-62M operating the flight. Registered as SP-LBG, data from ATDB.aero shows that this quadjet was just over three years old at the time. Indeed, the Polish flag carrier had received the rear-engined Soviet airliner brand-new in April 1984.

New York JFK has consistently been a key long-haul destination for LOT's Warsaw base. The national airline later introduced the Boeing 767 on the route, followed by the 787 'Dreamliner.' The latter of these two designs still connects the two airports today, albeit under a different flight number (LO26). LOT also serves the nearby Newark Liberty International Airport (EWR) with the 787 as LO15.
