Doctors provide poor information, at times, but don't
deliberately deceive...
-many have trouble separating fact from fiction
Email from colleague physician, that gave feedback on her
use of statins with her diabetic patients
-she was being pressured to
prescribe statins to every
diabetic patient!
-despite her belief that many
of her patients do not need it
-she looked for scientific papers
to clarify this

She found an 'expert review' paper which strongly promoted
statins for diabetics. It CLAIMED that statins would:
Help Patients Live Longer
6 references in support of the claim
-checked all 6 [if the claim is better mortality, studies must
report on mortality]
3 did not report mortality
3 on mortality did not get
statistically significant
results
[findings could have
been by random chance]

Very poor research when determining a medicine's worth...
Women's Health Initiative: found statin use can increase risk
of diabetes 71%
-Statin use increases risk of getting diabetes &
-risk of poor sugar control for diabetics
"Evidence used to support
the 'experts' claim' was
horrific"
This weak, corrupt paper
has been cited 69 times
in medical literature!

Problem: 'eminence-based' medicine relying expert opinion, not
on scientific data
-those in authority at venerable institutions exert undue
degree of influence over general opinion
"It is the direct ENEMY of evidence-based medicine"
Which is: Critical Appraisal
of the best available science
The doctor who sent the email
was trying to do the RIGHT
THING--and knew enough not
to trust the opinions of
these 'experts'

Many doctors are not aware that they have been
-misled & fed falsehoods in their training
"Most doctors still BELIEVE Hook Line & Sinker the
nutritional FALSEHOODS they were taught"
