Will Republicans Back Jim Jordan As The Next House Speaker?

Who will be the new Speaker of the House after Rep. Matt Gaetz (FL-1) was successful in his push to oust Rep. Kevin McCarthy (CA-20)? When asked if he would serve, President Trump said he would pursue what is “best for the country and for the Republican Party,” and Rep. Jim Jordan (OH-4) has thrown his hat in the ring.
We have complete chaos in the House. McCarthy is the first Speaker in U.S. history to be vacated from his position. And while the Democrats look unified – every single Democrat in the House sided with Gaetz’s efforts – the Republican Party is in disarray.
Is Trump a legitimate candidate for Speaker? If McCarthy was a controversial figure, I don’t see the House having enough votes to replace him with Trump.
Can you imagine Trump sitting behind President Biden at the next State of the Union address? While being considered for the Speaker position is an honor, Trump will likely focus on another bid for the presidency.
Rep. Jordan is a longtime friend of the ACLJ and has done terrific work as Chairman of the House Judiciary Committee in exposing the FBI for its targeting of conservatives and Christians. Jordan has been a great ally in fighting back against the Biden Administration’s overreach.
Even though Jordan might have several backers from conservative Republicans to be the next Speaker, it’s still uncertain if he can garner enough support from moderate Republicans.
A bigger question is, will Republicans be able to reconcile after this historic – and divisive – removal? How will this event affect the Republican Party as the country gears up for the 2024 presidential election?
