This is the last two-thirds of a presentation by Simpson Gumpertz & Heger given on January 26, 2024. There was a Q&A at the end and I can tell you from attending the webinar that the questions were cherrypicked for the softball questions. This is an example of how the narrative is controlled. FROM THEIR SITE: The collapse of the World Trade Center (WTC) towers in New York City on 11 September 2001 was an unprecedented event in U.S. history. Following the terrorist attack, the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) conducted an extensive investigation of the collapse. They retained Simpson Gumpertz & Heger (SGH) and Applied Research Associates (ARA) to develop computer simulations of the structural response of WTC-1 and WTC-2 to aircraft impact and subsequent fires, and of WTC-7 to damage from falling debris from the WTC-1 failure and the resulting fires. The study found that the tower collapses were caused by the combined effects of aircraft impact damage to the structure and its fireproofing, and the subsequent fires. In this hybrid webinar event, we will hear from the principal investigator of this collapse initiation analysis. Through a series of pre-recorded videos and animations, as well as live questions and answers, SGH’s Mehdi Zarghamee will describe the WTC collapse, discuss the NIST study and approach, and share the results of these efforts. This project posed enormous challenges that stretched the limits of computational modeling and analytics at the time. The project team had to invent new analytical methodologies that extended the existing computer program’s capabilities to meet the analysis of progressive failures of structures leading to total collapse. Former prosecutor and host of The Professor's Record David Clements joins me with his wife, Erin, to talk about the recent building in Surfside, Florida that is being attributed to some type of structural failure, but was actually nothing like that at all. Pipelines are an essential part of the oil and gas industry as they are the main means of transportation. As the offshore technology advances, subsea pipelines are being operated in more demanding environments. For the pipelines to operate efficiently, they have to be carefully designed. One of the main threats to the integrity of the pipeline is corrosion, which has caused many failures. Corrosion in subsea pipelines has different forms and understanding their mechanisms is an important step in inhibiting them and decreasing their rate of occurrence. As corrosion is unavoidable, it is beneficial to be able to calculate the corrosion rate and the corrosion allowance. By obtaining the results of the corrosion rate it becomes clearer which type of group of steel to consider for the fabrication of the pipeline. Subsea engineers battle harsh, corroding marine environments, as well as corrosive fluids that flow inside the pipeline, leaving pipelines extremely susceptible to damage. There are also many variables to consider when dissecting pipeline systems, such as differing installation processes, diameter and thickness of a pipeline, aging in hardware and materials failure. For instance, rigid pipelines are often made of carbon steel and are stiff and hard to install. In contrast, flexible pipelines are relatively easier and cheaper to install but difficult to maintain.
