#216 Shot Tower
The shot tower is a historic industrial structure that was used in the production of lead shot, which are small spherical pellets used as ammunition in firearms. The shot tower played a crucial role in the development of firearms and ammunition manufacturing during the 18th and 19th centuries. Here's a brief history of the shot tower:
Early Methods of Making Shot: Before the invention of shot towers, lead shot was typically made by casting molten lead through a sieve or by manually cutting it into small pieces. These methods were not very efficient and produced irregularly shaped shot pellets.
Invention of the Shot Tower: The shot tower was invented in the late 18th century as a more efficient and precise method of producing round lead shot. The concept behind the shot tower is to drop molten lead from a considerable height, allowing gravity to shape the lead into spherical pellets as it falls and cools.
The First Shot Tower: The first shot tower is believed to have been built by William Watts in Bristol, England, in 1782. It was a square brick tower that stood approximately 120 feet (37 meters) tall. Molten lead was poured from the top, and the droplets formed perfect spheres as they fell into a pool of water at the bottom.
Spread of Shot Towers: The success of the shot tower in producing high-quality lead shot led to the construction of similar towers in other parts of the world. Shot towers were built in various shapes and sizes, but most featured a tall central shaft with a pool of water at the base.
American Shot Towers: Shot towers were also constructed in the United States during the 19th century. One of the most famous American shot towers is the Phoenix Shot Tower, built in Baltimore, Maryland, in 1828. It stands 234 feet (71 meters) tall and was once the tallest building in the United States.
The Manufacturing Process: To create lead shot in a shot tower, lead was melted in a furnace at the top of the tower and poured through a perforated copper sieve or plate. The liquid lead formed into droplets as it fell, and these droplets solidified into spherical pellets before landing in the water below. The shot pellets were then collected, sorted by size, and sold.
Decline of Shot Towers: Shot towers remained in use well into the 20th century, but their popularity waned as new methods of shot production, such as the "Bliemeister method," were developed. These newer methods allowed for more efficient and cost-effective production of lead shot.
Today, many shot towers have been preserved as historic landmarks, and some have been repurposed for other uses. They serve as reminders of a bygone era when these unique structures played a significant role in the production of ammunition.
