Viral video of violent arrest ‘deceptively edited’ – sheriff’s office

The video of the arrest of a Florida man has gone viral online, appearing to show police officers violently restraining an unarmed black man, beating him and kicking him in the face until he is swollen and bleeding. The video of the arrest of Le’Keian Woods, for drug offenses, was recorded on a cellphone by a passerby, after which it was disseminated online to the usual TikTok and Twxtter outrage accounts. Another example of police brutality against a poor black man (making sure to capitalize on color, because that’s what AP does), systemic racism, reparations etc. were the outcries, as people prepared for a night of fiery but mostly peaceful protests.

One slight issue: it didn’t actually happen.

Jacksonville Sheriff T K Waters held a press conference to release the full, unedited bodycam footage of the incident. In said footage, we see the car Woods was in get pulled over on suspicion of being involved in a drug deal. A later search of the vehicle would confirm that it was. Woods’ brother, who was driving, surrendered, and was carrying a gun. Another passenger also surrendered without incident. Woods, however, chose to run. The way Woods held onto his pants made officers think he was reaching for a gun, but, as it turned out, he was just wearing fashionably ill-fitting pants unsuited for crime. A chase ensued, and, eventually, Woods was brought down by taser, faceplanting the pavement, causing his injuries. The ‘kick’ was actually just an officer, who was nowhere near Woods, stretching his legs after the chase, deceptively edited to make it appear like a kick. The ‘beating’ was simply Woods struggling (and twitching) while resisting arrest.

The family of Woods have still called for more transparency, and are planning on suing the sheriff’s office.
