On June 18, 2023, the submersible Titan embarked on a mission to view the wreck of the Titanic in the North Atlantic Ocean off the coast of Newfoundland, Canada. The submersible was carrying five passengers: Stockton Rush, the American CEO of OceanGate; Paul-Henri Nargeolet, a French deep-sea explorer and Titanic expert; Hamish Harding, a British businessman; Shahzada Dawood, a Pakistani-British businessman; and Dawood’s son Suleman 1. The mission was aimed at capturing detailed images of the ship and exploring its hull 1. However, the mission ended in tragedy when the submersible imploded near a sunken ocean liner, resulting in the deaths of all five passengers 12.

The incident has raised concerns about the safety of deep-sea exploration and has led to calls for more stringent safety measures to be put in place.
