Earth-monitoring satellites such as Landsat have provided valuable records of the gradual reduction in chimpanzee habitat within Africa's equatorial forest region. The Jane Goodall Institute harnesses the capabilities of Landsat and other satellite resources to empower local communities, enabling them to take the lead in conservation efforts within their own territories. This is achieved through the creation of habitat suitability maps tailored to chimpanzees.

Incorporating mobile applications for real-time data collection, these communities are equipped to safeguard their village forest reserves while establishing comprehensive land use plans that harmonize the needs of watersheds, people, and chimpanzees alike. Despite years of forest depletion, the past few decades have shown a heartening resurgence in habitat restoration.
