Heavy rains flooded subways in New York City, shut rail lines to its northern suburbs and turned its highways into rivers Friday in what has become the wettest day in the city since the remnants of Hurricane Ida hit the region in 2021.

New York Gov. Kathy Hochul declared a state of emergency for New York City, Long Island and the Hudson Valley as a storm inundated the tristate region. “People really need to be taking this extremely seriously," she said.
