Marielle Franco, born on July 27, 1979, grew up in the Maré favela, in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. She studied sociology at the Pontifical Catholic University of Rio de Janeiro (PUC-Rio), where she became involved in student movements and social activism. Throughout his career, Franco has stood out as a powerful voice in the fight for human rights, especially in relation to favela residents and the LGBTQ+ community. His practical experience deepened his understanding of social inequalities and motivated his tireless activism. In 2016, Franco was elected councilor of the city of Rio de Janeiro for the Socialism and Freedom Party (PSOL). During her tenure, she dedicated herself to a variety of causes, including combating police violence, promoting racial equality, defending women's rights, and protecting favela residents from state abuse. His performance in the Rio de Janeiro City Council was marked by his courageous stance and his willingness to confront difficult issues. In addition to her political work, Marielle Franco was also known for her advocacy for LGBTQ+ rights. She was a black lesbian woman in a predominantly male and heterosexual political environment, which made her an inspiring figure for many, who saw her not only as a political representative but also as a symbol of resistance. Unfortunately, on March 14, 2018, Marielle Franco was tragically shot dead in the center of Rio de Janeiro, along with her driver, Anderson Gomes. His death shocked Brazil and the world, triggering protests and demands for justice. Marielle Franco's legacy lives on through the organizations and people who continue to fight for human rights and social justice in her memory.
