Nov. 21, 1963 | President and Mrs. Kennedy Remarks to Latin American Citizens, Houston

Nov. 21, 1963 - Jacqueline Kennedy tonight capped a day of handshaking and politicking for her husband with a speech in almost-flawless Spanish to a Latin-American audience in Houston, Texas that brought down the house. For four hours after her arrival with President Kennedy in Texas, the First Lady looked windblown and somewhat disarrayed, but happy. Tonight she appeared before the League of United Latin American Citizens looking radiant in a black velvet suit. President Kennedy spoke briefly in English to the 650 people at the meeting, recalling “the very important links we have with our sister republics in this hemisphere.” The First Lady then hailed “the great state of Texas” in fluent Spanish.
