Where is everybody?

That simple yet profound question encapsulates one of the most bewildering enigmas in astrophysics and the search for extraterrestrial intelligence - the Fermi paradox.

Named after physicist Enrico Fermi, it refers to the stark contradiction between the mathematical likelihood that alien civilizations are common in the universe, and the complete lack of observational evidence that such civilizations actually exist.

By the numbers, our galaxy alone could contain millions of advanced alien species. Yet the cosmos is eerily quiet. No radio signals. This silence becomes even more troubling when you consider the age and scale of the universe. There are trillions of stars far older than our Sun. There should have been ample time for an intelligent civilization to colonize the galaxy, even without faster-than-light travel. And yet there is only silence.
