When the journalist Parvulesco in Jean-Luc Godard's Breathless is asked, "What is your greatest ambition?" he answers simply, "To become immortal, and then die." Watches remain alive so long as they have someone to care for them. They become immortal when that care transcends generations.
"You never actually own a Patek Philippe. You merely look after it for the next generation." The same is of course true of any watch of sentimental value.
