Fortress and Decay: The Impressive Saga of Hohenurach Castle

Constructed in the 11th century by the Counts of Urach, the castle underwent a transformation into a regional fortress in the 16th century under the Dukes of Württemberg. Since 1765, it has been in a state of ruin and is considered the distinctive landmark of Bad Urach.

Hohenurach Castle was first mentioned in writing in 1235. Count Ludwig I of Württemberg modernized the castle in 1427 and constructed new buildings on its foundations. After severe destruction during the Schmalkaldic War in 1547, the castle was rebuilt in 1551 under Duke Christoph of Württemberg. From the 16th century onwards, it also served as a state prison, housing individuals such as the Tübingen professor Nikodemus Frischlin (1547-1590). The Hohenurach fortress posed a constant threat to the residents of the nearby town. Only in 1765 did Duke Carl Eugen of Württemberg decide to relocate his troops to the town and dismantle the Hohenurach fortress. The castle complex became an imposing ruin, one of the largest and most significant in the southern German region.

Additional Information: During my visit in September 2023, there were still construction works at the ruins. Various areas were cordoned off and could not be entered. I hope that everything will be fully accessible again during your visit. It is a very beautiful place.
