A silent film released in France as Chat En Chut Libre, it was the first to publicly present the image of a cat in motion.

The short is part of a series of images recorded by Marey, with his chronophotographic rifle, to see if the cat dropped from a height always landed on its feet.

From 1890 to 1900, Marey and his assistants made numerous motion analysis strips of high aesthetic and technical quality, including the falling cat.

His works, widely publicized by the international press, were a strong inspiration for Thomas Edison and Louis Lumière, among others.
