How can we bring back the glory in the Philippine salt production industry? We are in the middle of the scenic saltbeds of Kawit, Cavite, where the 55-year-old “Tatay Nerly” remains to be one of the last saltmakers in the country.

Making one of the most important ingredients in the world is hard work and the effects of climate change are directly affecting the already tedious process. Globalization and the outdated ASIN Law of 1995 in the Philippines have hampered the growth of these small business owners who are struggling to keep the dying practice alive. The question remains: what is next for the local artisanal salt industry in the Philippines?
