Study Of Paul's Epistle To The Romans - The Fundamentals Of Christian Education & Church Principles. || Rom. 6:1-7
• Rom. 6:1-2 Since sin in a way makes grace more abundant (Rom_5:20-21) why not continue in sin? This is certainly a possible conclusion, though a wrong one, from the teaching about grace in ch. 5. Apparently Paul had been accused of teaching this false doctrine, and in order to silence his accusers, Paul shows in this chapter that a believer who continues in sin would be denying his or her own identity in Christ. The Greek expresses a response of shock, that has even been translated “God forbid.” The thought of a believer living in sin in order to take advantage of grace was abhorrent to Paul. The reason believers should not live in sin is that they have died to sin.

• Rom. 6:3-5 Paul uses the common experience of believers being baptized as a picture of being identified with Jesus Christ. Water baptism is a symbol of the spiritual union of Christ and the believer. When a person trusts Christ, he or she is incorporated into, united to, Jesus Christ, which includes being united to His death. Jesus’ death becomes our death. Christian baptism makes these spiritual realities vivid. If the believer’s identification with Christ means being identified with His death, then it logically follows that the believer also identifies with Jesus’ resurrection. Having died and having been raised with Christ, the believer should live a new kind of life.

Word 3
Study Of Paul's Epistle To The Romans - The Fundamentals Of Christian Education & Church Principles. || Rom. 6:1-7
• Rom. 6:6-7 The power of sin over us died with Christ on the cross. Our "old sinful selves," our sinful nature, died once and for all, so we are freed from its power. The "power of sin" refers to our rebellious sin-loving nature inherited from Adam. Though we often willingly cooperate with our sinful nature, it is not us but the sin in us that is evil. And it is this power of sin at work in our life that is defeated. Paul has already stated that through faith in Christ we stand righteous before God. Here Paul emphasizes that we need no longer live under sin's power.
