When an animal is discovered by science, it becomes real. Its history is rewritten: science always knew about the animal and the cryptozoologists who had spoken of them before were transformed from absurd eccentrics to true scientists. It can, then, be all too easy to forget that some of the animals we know of and take for granted once existed only in mythology and the fringes of scientific thought. Once cryptids, they were considered to be little more than monsters, hoaxes, pseudoscientific and entirely unlikely of actually existing.
