In this short video, we’re going to talk about the difference between ketosis and ketoacidosis. They are not the same thing.

Ketoacidosis is a very dangerous disease that happens when you have type 1 diabetes and are not making any insulin. The blood sugars go very high because you have no insulin to bring them down. Because ketones are acidic, the pH becomes a problem. The number of ketones you might have if you’re experiencing ketoacidosis would be about 20.

When you’re in ketosis, the number of ketones you might have would be between 1 and 8. With ketosis, you’re not getting a massive amount of ketones in the blood.

Ketosis is controlled through diet, and you don’t have very many symptoms (maybe slight adaptation symptoms that will resolve). With ketosis, there are low amounts of insulin (but it’s still there, the cells are getting nutrition, and the blood sugars are supported.
