New Lansing housing project underway
A major new housing project in Lansing gets underway. Construction crews will start demolishing the auditorium on the Michigan School for the Blind campus to make room for a new apartment complex. The Walnut Park Apartments Project will include 64 affordable housing units along with 8 market-rate apartments. Construction on the 4 story, 106,000 square foot building is expected to take about a year. Mayor Virg Bernero says the project will bring new life to the city. The old auditorium building that was once used by music legend Stevie Wonder has been vacant for more than two decades. The same contractor for this project, also plans on redeveloping the Abigail Building on the School for the Blind campus, with hopes of turning it into an affordable housing complex seniors.
