In this video, we’re going to talk about the adrenal glands. What are the adrenal glands, and how do they function? Take a look.

The adrenals are two glands that sit atop each of your kidneys. The adrenal glands are stress glands—they are a key part of the body’s response to physical and mental stress.

When you’re in a stressful situation, your adrenal glands help your body adapt to the stressor. If a tiger is chasing you, your adrenal glands will produce cortisol, adrenaline, and other stress hormones.

These hormones prepare your body for fight-or-flight mode—either to fight the threat or to run away from it.

The adrenal glands have an inside and an outside. The outside of the adrenals is all gland tissue, while the inside is all nerve tissue. The bundles of nerves inside the adrenals create neurotransmitters.

The adrenal glands produce many different hormones and neurotransmitters, including:
• Glucocorticoids
• Mineralocorticoids
• Androgens
• Estrogen
• DHEA

The glucocorticoids created in the adrenals influence your blood glucose levels. Too much of this hormone may increase the risk of diabetes.

High cortisol may cause:
• Increased stress
• Irregular blood glucose
• Immune suppression
• Bone loss
• Low vitamin D

Mineralocorticoids can affect electrolyte levels, fluid retention, and sodium levels.
