I want you to throw your scale away and stop weighing yourself. You may think this sounds crazy, but it’s not. Let me explain how weight is a misleading measure of progress.

So often, people tell me, “I’m not losing weight! What do I do?”. They feel discouraged and lose their motivation. I don’t want this to happen to you. Here’s what I say. When I ask if they’re losing inches, they say yes. I encourage them to keep going, because their keto eating plan is working.

Losing inches is more important than the number on the scale. For example, one man following my plan lost fifty pounds and ten inches off his waist. But as he lost those ten inches off his waist, he actually gained back ten pounds of the fifty he lost. Here’s why this is possible:

Muscle is heavier than fat. This man started with fatty muscle, which turned into lean muscle. When you fix insulin resistance, caused by chronically high insulin, your lowered amount of insulin allows your body to absorb protein into the muscle. Then you get your muscle back, and you start shrinking. Yes, even while you’re gaining weight!

Don’t let your life be ruled by the number on the scale. I want you to throw your scale away. Use your inches lost as the indication that your keto eating plan is working. Weighing yourself can cause you to get discouraged if you focus on the number of pounds instead of how much leaner you are.
