I want to tell you about how to maintain keto and intermittent fasting. Sometimes people have this idea that keto is a diet that lets you lose weight, then you go back to your regular way of eating. Not so!

I wouldn’t look at keto as a diet. It’s a healthy way of eating that provides the nutrients you need. Intermittent fasting is very natural for your body. Our bodies weren’t designed to eat six meals a day; or, even three per day. We evolved eating once or twice a day, not daily, but when food was available.

We’re designed to run on fat fuel. The goal of keto and intermittent fasting is to switch your metabolism to run on fat instead of sugar because the long-term effects of running your body on sugar aren’t good.

When you hit your ideal weight, you might think you’re healthy because you are no longer overweight. But that’s not necessarily true. True health includes having high levels of energy, sharp focus and concentration, low stress, and being physically fit. As well, you experience good sleep, and have a healthy heart along with good digestion.

Keto and intermittent fasting are tools to get you to a high level of health, so you build up something called a health reserve. You can go off keto and intermittent fasting occasionally without jeopardizing your health, because you’ve built up this reserve.

People often go off the program because they want to enjoy pleasure foods. But if you tweak recipes to make them keto-friendly, you can have almost any pleasure food including bread, cookies, and cake. You want to shift your viewpoint from eating to live instead of living to eat.

In other words, there’s really no difference between being in maintenance on keto and intermittent fasting and what you’ve been doing. They’re the same program. You’ll just have a big enough health reserve that you can occasionally go off keto without jeopardizing your overall health.
