In this video, I’m going to tell you about the best heart attack predictor—your coronary artery calcium score, also known as your CAC score. The coronary artery is the main artery that supplies blood flow to the heart. Typically, a heart attack is caused by a blockage in the coronary artery.

Calcium and cholesterol don’t cause damage to the arteries, they act as band-aids to repair arteries that have been damaged. This damage and inflammation is largely caused by high levels of insulin and can eventually lead to a heart attack.

The coronary artery calcium test (CAC test) is the direct measurement of the amount of damage in the coronary artery. The CAC test gives insight into a person’s lifestyle and diet and can predict cardiovascular health. It is important to note that a high CAC score can occur with normal cholesterol levels.

A coronary artery calcium test is quick and simple, and costs around $100. You can have normal triglycerides, blood sugar, and cholesterol, and still have calcium build up in the arteries. Around 50 percent of the time, a person can die of a heart attack with no symptoms at all, so don’t let it catch you by surprise.

Many doctors don’t push the CAC test for a number of reasons. If you have a high CAC score, there isn’t a general consensus on what to do about it. The problem is, calcium build-up in your coronary artery can’t be corrected with a drug.

The good news is that the damage is reversible with a healthy diet and lifestyle!
