In this video, we’re going to look at the important role of selenium in managing Hashimoto’s hypothyroidism.

Hashimoto’s disease is an autoimmune condition involving hypothyroidism or an underactive thyroid gland.

If you have Hashimoto’s disease, your immune system makes malfunctioned antibodies that attack the thyroid gland. The trace mineral selenium is essential because it helps to lower the levels of these malfunctioned antibodies.

Along with decreasing antibodies related to the thyroid, selenium is also involved in producing key enzymes necessary for various functions in the body. Selenium is responsible for the conversion of T4 to T3 along with mercury detoxification.

Mercury can become trapped in the thyroid gland, but selenium can bind to mercury so that it can be eliminated from the body.

When you go to your doctor to get your thyroid evaluated for Hashimoto’s, they will look at the levels of anti-thyroperoxidase antibodies and anti-thyroglobulin antibodies in your blood. In autoimmune malfunction, these malfunctioned antibodies attack thyroperoxidase and thyroglobulin and destroy them.

Thyroperoxidase and thyroglobulin are vital in the production of thyroid hormones. Selenium reduces these antibodies, supporting proper thyroid function.

You can take selenium supplements to increase your selenium intake or consume the following foods that are rich in selenium:
1. Brazil Nuts
2. Seafood (including Oysters and Shrimp)
3. Eggs
4. Seeds
