In this video, I explain a function of cholesterol that rarely gets any attention! Cholesterol is an antioxidant, which means it has a reparative function. But it also does many other things. It’s a precursor for hormones, especially the sex hormones testosterone and estrogen, along with the stress hormone cortisol.

Cholesterol helps your body make vitamin D and the bile you need for proper digestion. It binds to microbes.

Your body makes three times the amount of cholesterol you get from your diet. When you eat egg yolks, animal protein, fish, and other seafood, your body is actually producing three times as much as from those foods. It needs so much cholesterol to repair oxidative damage to the lining of your arteries caused by vegetable oils, iron, sugar, refined grains, trans fats, and smoking.

The cholesterol carried by what’s called your LDL cholesterol is grabbed to help patch holes in your arteries. You can see that cholesterol is there for a good reason: to help repair damage and actually improve your health.
