When you’re on keto, you may notice a strong odor in your urine or your breath. Here’s why.

Even if you’re not on keto, If your urine or breath has a strong odor, it’s often due to liver damage, dehydration, an infection, or something you ate. Or, if you consume too much protein, this can cause strong odor in your urine.

When you go on keto, and drop your carb intake very low, or if you’re fasting or intensely exercising, your ketones increase. The type of ketone that creates the odor is called acetone. It causes the most detectable odor in your urine or on your breath. You can check the acetone level of your breath with a special meter, but chances are if your urine is dark, cloudy, and has a detectable smell, acetone is causing it.

Acetone is also used as nail polish remover! But you don’t have to be concerned because that’s completely different. Your body naturally makes acetone from eating more fat and fewer carbs.

Here’s what I recommend to get rid of the odor:

Consume more chlorophyll. It’s a deodorizer. You can get more by eating leafy greens. Drink more fluid with electrolytes. Consume apple cider vinegar, either mixed in water or as a supplement with each meal.

As well, consume moderate amounts of protein. Don’t go crazy eating it!

One last thing: be consistent on keto. Some people go on it, then off it, then back on it. This makes your body dump out ketones, including acetones, because you’ve never given your body a chance to fully adapt to fat burning. You end up peeing out and breathing out all your excess ketones that your body simply hasn’t yet adapted to use. So, stay strictly on keto, and let your body adapt to efficiently using your ketones. Then they’ll no longer be excreted through your urine and your breath.

It’s simple to get rid of the odor that can happen when you’re on keto.
