In this video, I’ll explain the ways in which vitamin K1 is essential for good health. Vitamin K1 works together with vitamin K2, another vitamin that you need for good health.

Vitamin K1 is a cofactor to help your body make something called prothrombin, which helps form blood clots. Now, sometimes people don’t want to take K1 because they think they’ll get clots and have a heart attack. What they don’t understand is that K1 also has other proteins besides prothrombin that are anti-clotting. And K1 is important to help you make bone.

In fact, if you don’t have K1, you’ll have difficulty making bone even though your body has calcium and other minerals.

There are certain things that block your body’s ability to absorb K1. One is constipation. Another is if you have a liver problem; that is, fatty liver or cirrhosis. As well, if you have insulin resistance or gallbladder problems that prevent you from having enough bile to break down the fat soluble vitamin K1. Any type of damage in your colon like IBS can also prevent absorption, along with gastric bypass surgery.

Vitamin K1 helps make vitamin K2. Your body contains gut microbes that make 75 percent of the K2 in your body. That means if you take an antibiotic or otherwise damage your gut microbes, you’ll have a very difficult time making vitamin K2. You’ll know you’re deficient in K2 if you have calcification of the arteries or joints, or even bone loss.

The unique property of vitamin K1 is that it doesn’t get stored in your body, unlike the other fat soluble vitamins, meaning that you need to consume quite a bit of it. K1 is essential for bone health,

If you’re on the drug Coumadin, you can’t take K1 because Coumadin is a blood thinner, and you’re trying to prevent strokes. Because you get K1 from consuming leafy greens, this creates a problem. I recommend you eat 7 to 10 cups of salad per day on healthy keto, but if you’re on a blood thinner, you’re told not to eat leafy greens. If you’re on Coumadin and can’t consume them, check the link below for the vegetables I recommend you eat instead.

As well, talk with your doctor about switching to a drug called Eliquis instead, which would allow you to consume leafy greens.

Now you know why vitamin K1 is essential for good health.
