I interview Frank Tufano about his version of the carnivore diet.
If you find a diet with the right nutrients, you’ll be healthy. I’ve had a lot of success putting people on the healthy keto diet plan. But Frank brings up good points, which is that on the zero carb carnivore diet people drop inflammatory conditions of all kinds, especially autoimmune, gut issues, and allergies.
Frank advocates eating a nutrient dense diet and maintaining a ketogenic metabolism. He wants people to have high caloric density while keeping food volume low. A few years ago he came up with his own idea of doing a paleo and keto combination. When the carnivore diet became really popular, he realized he’d need to clarify and reach out to people on the diet to support them.
For example, liver and oysters are more calorically dense than meat, and Frank encourages people to eat them. He tried eating 4 to 5 pounds of meat per day as advised on the traditional carnivore diet, but felt awful. He wants people to understand they need high quality, nutrient dense food.
I advocate for moderate protein on keto, which as it turns out Frank does too. When people eat pounds of well-cooked meat each day, they put themselves at risk for B vitamin deficiency. Frank urges people to eat fat to satiation, eat organ meats and nutrient dense foods, eat muscle meat as a lower priority. As well, you are at risk for becoming vitamin C deficient.
On a given day, Frank eats: a specific DHA and omega 3 ratio, usually sourced from high quality organ meat such as the brain. He eats liver for its vitamin A, along with ensuring enough K2 and vitamin D. We had a detailed discussion about the nutrient profiles of different food. For both keto and the carnivore diet, nutrient-dense food is absolutely critical.
We acknowledged that food sourcing for nutrient-dense items on a budget is challenging, but Frank has some suggestions. He’s taken time to develop relationships with wholesale food vendors, which helps. Be sure to check out Craigslist!
Vitamins D3 and K2 are the two most important ones to supplement, on either diet.
And I recommend the carnivore diet for people who have significant digestive issues if they eat too many vegetables.
I hope you enjoy our wide-ranging discussion on the carnivore diet compared to keto, when we discuss fasting, farmer’s markets, and more.
