I explain why the keto diet and intermittent fasting together work so well. The keto diet puts you into ketosis. More on that in a minute. I’ve talked about the benefits of simply avoiding junk foods and high amounts of sugar to reduce your insulin. This alone is huge! But there’s more.

There’s hormesis, from the field of toxicology. It’s a cellular response to a low dose of stress that gives favorable biological effects. A positive stress is referred to as eustress. With ketones (in ketosis) you’re shifting your cells’ fuel source, which creates some positive stress. Same with intermittent fasting, which is the stress of starving but only intermittently.

Adapting to ketosis usually takes about 3-5 days but could be longer if you have severe insulin resistance. When you adapt to ketosis, these are the benefits you get:

●A surge of antioxidant production and defense. Antioxidants help counter the damage caused by free radicals, which are unstable atoms in your body that cause oxidative damage. Vitamin A, vitamin C, and vitamin E are all antioxidants. You can get antioxidants from the environment but your body also makes them. One is beta hydroxybutyrate (BHB) which is basically a ketone.

●An enhanced resistance to oxidative stress. Oxidation from high levels of glucose and insulin corrodes your kidneys, eyes, and inside of your arteries along with your nervous system and brain. Thus, generating ketones and intermittent fasting resists chronic disease.

●Enhanced function of your mitochondria, which are the energy factories within your cells. Ketones help mitochondria generate and maintain energy during nutrient deprivation; ie fasting. This is why your energy goes up when you do ketosis plus intermittent fasting. You’re more efficient at using oxygen, and produce fewer waste products such as hydrogen peroxide. You also have enhanced nutrient absorption, making your nutrient intake requirements lower.

The symptoms that you’re adapting to ketosis are keto rash, keto flu, and the like. These indicate you need nutrients that support fat oxidation. You also need more potassium and magnesium along with fiber and B vitamins. Add in leafy green vegetables to ease your transition into the keto diet.
