Let’s talk about the most important nutrient if you’re vegan on the keto diet. But first, one of the challenges if you’re on keto and you’re vegan is keeping your carbs low, your protein high, and making sure you’re getting enough:

●B12
●Iron
●Vitamin A
●Vitamin D
●Trace minerals

But the most important nutrient that vegans typically don’t get enough of on keto is essential fatty acids (EFA) which are omega 6 and omega 3.

I’m not concerned about omega 6 because they’re easy to get. The one I’m most concerned with is what’s called alpha linoleic acid (ALA). You can get it in walnuts, chia seeds, flax seeds, and a lot of other food.

But here’s the problem. ALA itself doesn’t do you much good unless it converts into the fats EPA and DHA. These two fats are vitally important if you’re vegan. You’re not consuming fatty fish like salmon, or taking cod liver oil, so you won’t get EPA and DHA.

The conversion of alpha linoleic acid to DHA and EPA is a very low percentage. And if you’re consuming a large amount of omega 6, the percentage can go even lower.

EPA and DHA are vitally important in brain physiology and nervous system physiology. They’re important anti-inflammatories, and help stabilize your mood to prevent depression and anxiety and maintain cognitive function.

Fortunately, you can get these essential fatty acids by taking microalgae. Go online or to a health food store and look for this vegan source, and make sure it has both EPA and DHA so that you get these most important nutrients when you’re on the keto diet.
