I was asked if melons are okay to eat on the keto diet. So I’ll talk about watermelon, cantaloupe, and honeydew.

The problem with melons is that they’re a little too high on the glycemic index. These melons range from eleven to fifteen grams of carbs per cup, with low fiber content, giving them each fairly high net carbs. As well, their sugar content is a little too high, ranging from nine to fourteen grams per cup.

If you consume a small amount of melon here and there, it’s not a big deal as long as you keep your total carbs on the low and realize there’s a fair amount of sugar in these melons.

If you’re trying to lose weight then consuming melon could be a barrier to getting into fat-burning mode. A better solution would be blackberries or other berries because they have more fiber and less sugar.

But melon is actually better than an apple! One medium-size apple has nineteen grams of sugar. And one pear has seventeen grams of sugar.

So if you had to decide if the melon is okay to consume on the keto diet, the answer is yes in small occasional amounts, but ideally, steer clear of it.
