I explain what causes crusty eyes, and how you can remedy them. There are some amusing names for crusty eyes, including sleep dust, eye sand, and eye gunk.
The cause is a low vitamin A situation; in other words, vitamin A deficiency. When you’re low in vitamin A your eyes dry out but you also get a thickened mucus.in them.
I want to differentiate this condition from when you feel like you have sand in your eyes except there’s no sand in them. That’s when you have low vitamin B2; in other words, a vitamin B2 deficiency or it could be low blood sugar (hypoglycemia).
Vitamin A is a fat soluble vitamin, the active form (retinol) of which is found mostly in animal products like eggs, beef liver, and cod liver. Cod liver is also rich in vitamin D, so I highly recommend it.
The pre-vitamin A, beta carotene and carotenoids that have the ability to turn into retinol, come from plants. Even though the conversion is low, I suggest eating both animal and plant sources.
A vitamin A deficiency is created by having low iron or insufficient pancreatic enzyme (lipase) that leaves you unable to digest fat. You could become lipase deficient because you’re consuming too many processed foods and refined sugars.
Or if you have a gallbladder, or have had yours removed, you won’t be able to absorb the full amount of vitamin A. Check out the link below for more videos about the gallbladder.
Alcohol can affect your liver and decrease your ability to absorb vitamin A.
As well, if you have any type of IBS or inflammation in your colon, you could become vitamin A deficient. Perhaps you’ve had gastric bypass or experienced some other kind of damage to your digestive system, as happens when you take antibiotics.
These are all reasons why you could be vitamin A deficient despite consuming it in your diet. If you’re vegan and not consuming animal products, you could lack vitamin A.
If you have crusty eyes, increase your vitamin A intake from animal sources. Cod liver oil is excellent. Then isolate which of the factors I described may be preventing you from absorbing vitamin A.
Now you know what to do if you have crusty eyes.
