A woman asked me how to stop cravings during a menstrual cycle. She’s on keto and doing intermittent fasting, without any cravings until that time of the month.
For those of you not on keto and intermittent fasting, check out the video below to learn how to handle your cravings for good. But if you still have cravings despite being on keto and intermittent fasting it’s usually due to low serotonin.
Serotonin is a neurotransmitter made in both your gut and your brain. In the brain, it’s made in your brain stem, in an area also involved with sleep. There are a lot of estrogen receptors in this same area. And the estrogen controls the amount of the building block for serotonin — called tryptophan — that can get in. Thus the most likely reason you have low serotonin is that you also have low estrogen; in other words, not enough to activate the conversion of sufficient tryptophan to serotonin.
Symptoms of low estrogen include mood swings (PMS), headaches, depression, and low libido.
If you’re not on a high carb diet you shouldn’t have a low blood sugar situation or high insulin. But if you are eating carbs then you’ve got to fix the low blood sugar.
If you have low serotonin here’s what you can do:
● Take L-tryptophan on an empty stomach
● Raise your estrogen since it’s usually lowered by something else that’s pushing it down; often, cortisol from stress. Or it could be from androgens like testosterone, made excessive by high insulin. If you’re on keto and intermittent fasting, your insulin levels aren’t a concern.
● Take a high-quality flaxseed oil
