I interviewed Dorian Greenow, the founder and CEO of the company Keto Mojo, which makes a ketone measuring device that can support your keto diet success. I use this device; it’s one of my favorites.

When you do keto or intermittent fasting, it’s important to know where you’re at and measures your progress accurately. You don’t want to guess if you’re in ketosis. The urine strips aren’t reliable; they measure only the ketones that have spilled over into your urine and not the true level in the rest of your system. A blood test is far more accurate.

There are three types of ketones: acetoacetate, acetone, and beta-hydroxybutyrate (BHB). Acetoacetate is the type that’s spilled into your urine, and its measurement is subjective by the shade of color on the urine strip.

Acetone is fairly volatile, but it quickly converts to BHB, which is far more stable and is what Keto Mojo measures. Breath testing measures acetone, which measurement can be inadvertently compromised by certain compounds such as sugar alcohol or even alcohol itself.

Keto Mojo measures both the ketones and the glucose in your blood. You need to measure both to get the full picture of your ketosis. For ketones, the ideal range is .5 to 3; higher isn't necessarily better.

Figure out your ketone baseline measurement, and then monitor your blood glucose to understand why you may not be getting to ketosis as quickly as you would like to. You can ao start to figure out which foods you may be sensitive to, such as sugar alcohol, or dairy. Keto-friendly foods may trigger your insulin.

Your first glucose measurement of the day should be about an hour after waking, otherwise, your blood sugar will likely be deceptively high because of the cortisol spike associated with what’s called the dawn phenomenon.

Your ketones are usually lowest in the morning then rise gently during the day if you’re eating clean. Or, to see the effect of a certain food, you can test ketones and blood glucose before and after a meal with that food. The most important thing is to learn about your body.

Eating dietary fat can raise your ketones but if you eat too much this may prevent you from losing stored body fat. Another reason why measuring with Keto Mojo can help you determine what’s happening in your body.

Be sure to watch the whole interview for more insights about how Keto Mojo can support your keto diet success.
