In this video I answer the question, why do women live longer than men? Men on average live 76 years; women 81.

It has to do with one hormone: estrogen. Let me explain.

In your body, there’s a constant battle for balance between oxidation and antioxidants. Whether the cause or oxidation is chemicals, too much stress, or too much sugar, your food also contains antioxidants to counter oxidation. Your body also makes antioxidants.

But if there’s an excess of oxidation at the cellular level without enough antioxidants, you’ll get a buildup of free radicals. A free radical is an atom containing what’s called an unpaired electron, resulting in an unstable electron which causes the damage. I’m talking about damage to your DNA and various proteins in your body.

Estrogen can come in as a very powerful antioxidant and give you what you need to balance out the oxidation. As well, you can get phytoestrogens from plants such as cruciferous vegetables that help your antioxidant networks.

Then you have your genes, which are like your body’s hardware. Think of them as like a DVD that holds several movies. You need a DVD player with specific software to extract the information. That’s where epigenetics comes in, it’s the process by which certain genes are turned on or off. The turning on or off is influenced by factors such as nutrients, stress, exercise, fasting, and hormones.

Estrogen has the capacity to turn on certain longevity genes. So while women have to go through pregnancy, their menstrual cycle, and menopause, they get to live longer.

And now you know the answer to the question, why do women live longer than men!
