I was asked why, when you start the keto diet and intermittent fasting, you can sometimes feel depressed.

Now, normally when you do keto and intermittent fasting, your mood is supposed to go up. But if it goes down, we know you have nutritional deficiencies. When you’re fasting; that is, not eating, if you have any subclinical nutritional deficiency, symptoms will be magnified when you do intermittent fasting. And, sometimes from keto too.

The number one nutritional deficiency people tend to have is that of zinc. You can get zinc from seafood and from other animal products such as beef and eggs. If you’re already consuming those foods and still have a zinc deficiency, you may not have enough stomach acid to absorb the zinc. If you’re consuming grains you could also be zinc deficient, because grains have phytic acid that blocks zinc.

The next most common deficiency is that of vitamin D. Vitamin D is excellent for depression, and a lot of people are deficient. Let’s say it’s winter, and you’re relying solely on your food for vitamin D. There’s not much sunshine that will promote vitamin D production in your body. It’s difficult for you to get enough of it from your food unless you’re doing a lot of cod liver oil, salmon, and egg yolks. Take a vitamin D3 supplement, which will usually improve depression.

The last thing that may cause depression is a vitamin B12 deficiency. If you’re consuming animal products, you should get enough. But there are people who have a genetic condition that prevents them from absorbing B12 (folate). Check the link below this video for more information.

These are the three most common nutrients involved in depression if you don’t have enough of them. As I explained, when you first start the keto diet and intermittent fasting, your nutritional deficiencies can be magnified.
