In this video, I explain three reasons why you crave carbs. I’ve done a lot of videos on this topic, so feel free to watch those too. Mostly I’ve discussed one reason, which is the condition called insulin resistance that is caused by consuming a high carb diet. It raises your insulin and keeps your blood sugar low, causing you to crave carbs. Here are the three reasons:
1. Insulin resistance means insulin no longer gets into your body’s cells, and that fuel isn’t available. Your cells are literally hungry and craving carbs. This is why the ketogenic diet and intermittent fasting work.
2. You don’t eat enough fat. Dietary fat allows you to feel satisfied. This is especially important because you can then go longer between meals when you do intermittent fasting, and you can correct insulin resistance.
3. Your micronutrients are low. This is so important to understand. Everyone focuses on the macronutrients with keto: keeping carbs low, protein moderate, and fat high. For example, zinc, iron, iodine, and selenium are vital. Good food sources are seafood, liver, seaweed, beef, and salmon. And I explain more regarding water-soluble vitamins such as vitamin C and vitamin B, and fat-soluble vitamins such as vitamins A, D, E, and K.
If you consume the macronutrients you require, you’ll feel satisfied and be healthy. For example, you can get vitamin C from vegetables, berries, and sauerkraut. Folate, a B vitamin, is found mainly in dark leafy greens like asparagus, spinach, and kale. The liver is a powerhouse that is full of micronutrients including B vitamins. Whole grains and rice also contain B vitamins but these foods aren’t for keto.
Minerals are important; especially magnesium and potassium. Any green food has magnesium, including avocados. Potassium is abundant in vegetables.
Liver, eggs, cod liver oil, and fish are full of fat-soluble vitamins. I explain in more detail, so be sure to watch the video all the way through. These foods can help lessen or even eliminate your carb cravings.
These three reasons why you crave carbs are very straightforward and easy to correct.
