In this video, I explain a condition called burning throat syndrome, also called silent acid reflux. This is a condition in which acid is coming up into your esophagus from your stomach and creating a lot of irritation in your throat, although not necessarily in your stomach.
Stomach acid has a pH of between 1 and 3; that’s highly acidic, like battery acid. Your stomach is designed to hold acid, so it has a protective liner, but your esophagus doesn’t have one since it isn’t intended to have acid in it. This leads to damage to your throat and vocal cords. You may have to frequently clear your throat and cough, and you may also experience pain in your sternum.
The medical name for this condition is laryngopharyngeal reflux (LPR). There’s also a condition called GERD, in which the valve between the stomach and esophagus doesn’t close, and can cause the same symptoms.
So here’s the thing. This valve is controlled by three things: the pH of your stomach acid. If it’s too alkaline, the valve won’t close correctly. Thus, it allows acid up into your esophagus. This is why I always recommend apple cider vinegar or betaine hydrochloride.
Second, you could have a problem with your autonomic nervous system. If you’re diabetic, you’re at risk for issues with this system. This is why, for example, diabetics have problems with peripheral neuropathy or the nerves to the retinas of their eyes, or even ringing in the ears and deafness.
Third, it could be a problem with a hormone called gastrin, the hormone that makes gastric acid. As a side note, gastric acid isn’t only hydrochloric acid. It also contains sodium chloride and potassium chloride. So you actually need salt and potassium to make gastric acid.
But there’s one more thing. If you’re vitamin D deficient, you could have a lowered amount of gastrin. Lower amounts of gastrin mean lower amounts of acid, affecting the valve and allowing acid up into your esophagus.
You can take betaine hydrochloride and apple cider vinegar. If this doesn’t help, make sure you’re consuming enough salt and potassium in your diet. As well, take vitamin D in case you have a deficiency. These steps should remedy your silent acid reflux.
