In this video, I explain the anti-aging benefits of olive oil. I posted a link below to a study that exposes what happens when someone’s blood is exposed to hydrogen peroxide, a very powerful and damaging oxidizing agent. The study focused on the effects with and without olive oil.

Any time you expose something to hydrogen peroxide, you get oxidation. But olive oil has a phenol, a phytonutrient that’s a powerful antioxidant. The results of the study showed significant reduction in oxidative damage to DNA, thanks to olive oil.

As you age, you become more susceptible to damage to your genes, and less ability to repair the damage. Your chromosomes become shorter. The ends of your chromosomes have a protein on them called telomeres. When they become shorter, there’s a link to longevity. Shorter telomeres seem to mean you don’t live as long. Which makes sense, because the more damage to or breaks in your genes, the more diseases you’ll have.

As I mentioned, the phenols in olive oil counter oxidative damage. An oxidant originally meant something that lost an electron. For example, a free radical is an atom with an unpaired electron, making it unstable and causing it to seek other electrons to stabilize itself. It will rob and steal electrons from other tissues, causing damage. There are millions of free radicals that can cause a lot of damage.

You know when iron is exposed to oxygen, it rusts. This is a similar process to the oxidative damage that happens in your body.

Your body makes oxidants, as well as antioxidants, and you also get them from your environment. You can get antioxidants from your food. And as I’ve mentioned, olive oil especially with its phenols provides protection for your DNA and especially for your mitochondria.

Interestingly, the mitochondria have their own DNA that’s separate from the DNA in the rest of the cell, though both DNAs communicate with each other. The DNA of the mitochondria is outside the protective nucleus of the cell, and thus is more susceptible to damage, especially from oxidation. Because mitochondria are the cells’ energy factories, they burn up oxygen and other fuel, creating a fair amount of oxidation. Some serious diseases, including cancer, originate in the mitochondria because of the oxidative environment.

Unlike olive oil, most oils you consume are oxidative and contribute to damage to your body. I’m talking about soy oil, corn oil, cottonseed oil, and the like. And now you can see why olive oil is anti-aging.
