With a good moral mass-hysteria, you can do pretty much anything: from eliminating political rivals under the espionage act of WWI or with McCarthyism in the Cold War, to invading Iraq because of imaginary "WMDs". You can justify support for a relentless trench-war in Europe and again discredit political enemies as "Putin puppets" while simultaniously arguing against the integrity of one election (2016) due to "Russiagate" while upholding the next one (2020) and tarnishing any dissent again as the machinations of evil.
