Today we’re going to talk about why you should never add lemon to hot tea. A lemon has about 23mg of vitamin C. But, the vitamin C in lemons is very sensitive to heat. It may be much better to let your tea cool down before adding lemon.

Keep in mind that the lemon juice in a container that you would buy from the store has likely been pasteurized. This means that it’s already been cooked, and there is not a lot of natural vitamin C in the product. If there is vitamin C added to the product after it’s been heated, it’s typically not the complete vitamin C complex.

If you preserve the vitamin C by having your lemon in a cold glass of tea, the vitamin C and citric acid can help you retain a certain phytonutrient, catechin, in the tea by 5x. This phytonutrient is responsible for a lot of health benefits.
