WHAT IS AMEX PAY OVER TIME?
- Amex Pay Over Time is a flexible financing option that can be turned on / off on Amex charge cards (i.e. Amex Green Card, Amex Gold Card, Amex Platinum Card, Amex Centurion Card / Amex Black Card, Amex Plum Card).
- Charge cards normally must be paid in full, meaning you cannot carry a balance from one month to the next.
- However, if you activate the Pay Over Time feature, eligible charges of $100 or more can be automatically added to your Pay Over Time balance so you can pay them off over time with interest.
- In other words, turning on the Amex Pay Over Time feature makes your Amex charge card function like a hybrid card: part charge card & part credit card. Like a credit card, you’ll also have a Pay Over Time limit.
- You can still pay your monthly balance in full by the due date and avoid all interest and fees.

THE OFFER: EARN 20K – 30K AMEX MEMBERSHIP REWARDS POINTS
- Amex often targets people to enroll in the Pay Over Time option. If you do so, you can earn anywhere from 20,000 – 30,000 Amex points for simply activating it. You do not need to actually use the feature by financing your purchases or carrying a balance. It’s simply an incentive to turn the feature on and ‘consider’ using it.

HOW TO CHECK IF YOU’RE TARGETED

1. EMAIL. Subject lines may vary. A recent one was: “Good news, [your name]! You’re eligible to earn 30,000 points by activating this flexible payment option.”

2. MAIL. Check your mailbox for a promotional brochure / flyer from American Express.

3. LINK. Try this link & log into your account: https://global.americanexpress.com/lending/activatepayovertime

4. POP UP WINDOW. This may appear when you log into your Amex account and select one of your eligible charge cards (Amex Platinum, Amex Gold, Amex Green, etc. – both business charge cards and personal charge cards have this feature).

5. AMEX OFFERS. Check this section of your account on each of your Amex charge cards.

6. STATEMENTS & ACTIVITY TAB. Log into your Amex account and follow these steps:
- Select a charge card
- Click on the Statements & Activity tab on the top menu
- Choose the Recent Transactions menu option on the left side
- Look for an offer to enroll in Pay Over Time on the page, likely underneath Pending Charges and Posted Charges.

HOW TO GET TARGETED AMEX OFFERS FOR PAY OVER TIME
Amex charge cards usually come with the Pay Over Time feature already activated when you get approved for them. Since the bonus points opportunity is for the activation itself, you’re unlikely to get targeted if the feature is already on. So, turn it off on all charge cards, then simply let time pass to see if an offer comes your way.

HOW TO TURN OFF AMEX PAY OVER TIME

1. Log into your Amex account
2. Select one of your Amex charge cards
3. Click on the Account Services tab on the top menu
4. Click on the Payment & Credit Options tab on the left-side menu
5. Choose the ‘Pay Over Time: Inactive’ option to turn it off
6. Tap on the Submit button to save changes
