News of the Chinese President’s purge of senior leaders such as his defense minister in recent weeks comes in the context of China’s weakening economy and that major military force movements are occurring. Just since mid-September we’ve seen six of China’s roll on roll off ferries leave their normal routes and re-position to ports in Fujian province just across the straights from Taiwan, late last week and over the weekend video of massive armor movements by rail leaked, and record numbers of Chinese communist warplanes are flying into Taiwan’s air defense zones all the way around the island. The US and China continue to hold high level meetings with the most recent being National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan with China’s foreign minister, Wang Yi, who has told the U.S. that Taiwan is the most important “red line” in their relationship. We are seeing what appears to be a strategic shift backed by operational and tactical movements. Is this actual prep for an invasion of Taiwan or more military exercise saber rattling?
