Can Ukraine make it to the sea of Azov ? Will Russian forces be able to readjust to the gains recently made? Since then the picture on the battlefield has become more clear and on September 23rd Ukrainian forces have since broken through the 2nd line of defenses in Verbove which means they’ve cleared a path through the anti-tank obstacles allowing armor to pour through. They are still 20 km from Tokmak which if they are able to capture that city it will represent a real breakthrough in all the layers of defensive lines and it's the stated minimum goal of Ukraines offensive at this point.

The redeployment of the Russian 76th Guards Air Assault Division is Russia’s hope that this force will stop the Ukrainian advance attempt in their tracks. This unit is said to be one of the most combat effective and best Russian units there are. Who exactly is Ukraine up against? In command of this elite unit is 43 year old Dennis Shishov he likely has the rank of Major General he has received a Hero of the Russian Federation medal for his prior actions at the Dnieper River in 2022. Reports indicate “Denis' unit was responsible for seizing and holding the bridge near Kakhovka and reportedly repelled 7 attacks. He received shrapnel wounds to the head, but apparently survived.” To give you an idea of his qualifications he completed Ryazan Higher Airborne Command School in (2003), and training at the Combined Arms Academy of Russian Armed Forces in (2014). So in theory he has experience in planning combined arms maneuvers.
